Who knew the suburbs had so many turtles?? Last year we found a turtle and named him Salad. He was caught under a drain pipe during a storm and couldn't go backwards, only getting more frustrated and more stuck as he plowed forward. Just his luck, we stumbled across him and "rescued" him. The boys named him Salad because that was what we told them turtles eat. I actually have no idea what turtles eat (do you??) but we had some lettuce and celery on hand so that's what he got.
Last month was a rainy month and lo and behold, we found two more turtles. The boys were convinced this first one was Salad the Turtle. We marked him with a green spot in case we saw him again, just to be sure. I was worried we were marking him for sure death by hawk, painting a bulls eye on his shell and all, so we painted a green mark just to be safe.
About two weeks later Mark found this cute little guy while he was weed eating in the front yard. Saved from sure death, he also had the good fortune to become a McHam pet for the night. These poor turtles. This guy was much younger and much more brave.
He may be more timid the next time he is "saved" by humans. The boys took him everywhere for the day including on some Wiggle Car rides.
Isn't he cute??
